1. Think carefully about the work you want doing before you speak to anyone. A clear idea will help you get an accurate quote.
2. Draw up a shortlist of plumbers using a local directory. Online directories will provide you with contact information, reviews and the plumbers' websites, so you can make sure they are suitable.
3. Don't forget to speak to your friends and relatives to see if they are able to recommend a good plumber in your area.
4. Whittle your shortlist down even further by checking which ones are a member of the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering.
5. Get a quote from three or four plumbers, so you have a few prices to compare.
6. If there's a quote you are happy with, ask for it in writing. The final cost of the job should not deviate from this. If it does, you at least should have been notified by the plumber at the start of the work.
7. Provide a written brief for the builders to work from. The clearer the brief, the better. Leave no room for confusion.
8. In return, make sure you get written confirmation from the builders, including the quote, when it will be completed, working arrangements, daily working hours, etc.
9. At the end of the project, always ask for a breakdown of the bill. If there are any charges you are unsure about, make sure you ask the plumber to explain. They will often be fully justified, but it's important you have peace of mind.
10. Also at the end of the project, make sure you provide a review their work online. That way other people can learn from your experience.
So, now it's just a case of searching for plumbers in your area. For instance, you may want to use a Birmingham directory in your hunt for Birmingham plumbers?
