Every era and decade has its fashion statements that end up turning into an icon of that particular time in history. The Fifties in particular were an interesting time, as many new and bold styles found their way onto the market. This was really the time when teenagers began to dress more evocatively and found a style of their own ? and as a result they have continued to do so ever since.
Individual clothing pieces also made their way into the public eye during this time. Several well known chain stores started selling key pieces such as knitted sweater dresses. Owing to the widespread nature of the stores lots of people were able to get hold of the items and wear them frequently as a result.
Women had a very specific look to follow during the Fifties. Full skirts were very much the order of the day, but above this the waistline was very much tucked in. This was the case with both skirts and dresses. Floral designs were also very popular in conjunction with these dresses and skirts as well.
Even outerwear such as coats and jackets had this same look for women. The coats flared outwards as they went down, covering the skirts of the same style. They tended to be buttoned up to the collar and the collar itself could be very close fitting at times. The whole look could be topped off with a hat that was either very large with a wide brim or very small and minimal, like a pill box design.
Some items of 1950s fashion were also carried on from previous decades. A good example was the bobby sock, an item of clothing that was also popular during the 1940s. This was easily coupled with many of the 1950s fashions for women, creating a look that is still iconic of those times today.
Nylon stockings were also coming into their own during the Fifties. A lot of this was due to the fact that nylon was developed during World War Two. This meant many women were now taking the opportunity to add these new stockings into their overall fashion wardrobe.
In many ways the Fifties were an iconic time. These times are remembered and instantly recognised through the clothes that were worn back then. Many of the fashion items were quite simple in style, driven largely by the fact that World War Two had not long come to an end. Expensive items were not in keeping with the times, but innovation certainly was.
But even today people can take inspiration from the Fifties. Vintage jewellery is one of the most popular ways to bring inspiration from this era into the 21st century, mixing it with modern styles to create yet another new fashion look.
